Professor Denis Beenen

Bio

Brazilian jiu-jitsu

Denis began training at OpenMat in 2011 and received his Black Belt under Professor Elliott Bayev in 2021. He has a strong passion for Martial Arts and Self-Defense, sports, and teaching. He has Degree’s in Kinesiology/Physical Health Education as well as Teaching from the University of Toronto. This has given him a strong understanding of human movement and effective teaching methodologies, making Denis a very detail-oriented coach. Denis strives to stay up to date on the newest and latest evolutions in the sport and has led him to learn from some of the very best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructors around the world. He has also taught seminars and classes in Australia, Asia, and Central America. Denis is an avid competitor, having competed all over the world in some of the most prestigious competitions, as well as representing Canada in the JJIF and UWW World Championships. Outside of teaching BJJ, Denis works in Crisis Management and Violence Prevention in the health care and social services sectors.
